Unicoi State Park Lake

Upon Arrivial

As we pulled into Unicoi we drove across what I thought to be a bridge, but soon realized we were crossing over a dam. Looking off to my left I saw this lake with dark eire clouds rolling in through the green tree covered mountains. I damn near wrecked my truck into the side of the dam wall because I couldn't take my eye off the view.

Lake Loop Trail

There was a 2.4 mile trail that followed the waters edge around the whole lake called Lake Loop Trail. Heather and I walked the trail a couple of times after eating dinner. I figured we better take advantage of such a great opportunity to walk off the hearty dinners. As we walked up to the start of the trail we could see there were several lookout platforms that would make for some great photos. I couldn't stop snapping shots then I soon realized I was almost out of memory (digital camera), and we were only at the first checkpoint. Funny thing is we would see several people walking the trail drinking water and eating granola, but not us. I had a backpack filled with brews and wine so we could enjoy a drink or two and gander at the view(s).

Beach Club

As we were walking along the trail we could see the Unicoi State Park beach house across the lake. There you could rent canoes, paddle boats and even do some swimming, but it was closed. So we chilled for a while, gave Turkish some water, chilled some more, then started to walk the second half.

Damn Dam

As we got closer to the dam we wondered how the trail would follow. Needless to say the trail took us right over the dam (on the road). We took a gander to see how the dam actually worked. I really can't explain how it worked so here are some photos.

Last Leg

A we crossed over the dam we noticed it was getting dark and Heather suggested we head back. I didn't mind... what else was I gonna do that night. So we took our time. The trail followed through the trees and we noticed that there were cottages up on the hillside. Shit... that isn't camping. Whatever. Now it was totally dark, but along the trail there were lights spaced every 30 yards or so apart. This made for a smooth hike back to camp.
