Brasstown Bald

Highest Peek In Georgia

If At First You Don't Succeeed...

After visiting Anna Ruby Falls, we decided to hit up Brasstown Bald. Brass Balls (the nickname my dad gave it several years ago when I was a kid) was about a 30 minute drive from the falls. Heather and I wanted to get in as much sight seeing as possible. I think Turkish had something else in mind. He was beat after the falls hike.

The weather started looking a little negitive so we hauled ass through the winding roads. Heather started getting a little car sick due to my rally style driving. Did I mention no traffic lights? Aw ya... We're here. The road up to the top was pretty crazy. It had something like a 25-30 degree climb with no guard rails. The truck was earning its keep that's for sure.

Getting to the Top (for the first time)

The higher we got... the more cloudy it became. We finally reached the top (parking lot) and we couldn't even see 20 feet in front of us. Clouds rolled in and covered everything. I had no clue where the hell we were. Almost seemed like I could have driven right off the side of the mountain. I then said to Heather, "Told you I could take you to the clouds." "Very funny," she replies. We scratched the idea of hiking to the peek and headed back to camp.

...Try Try Again

The following day we decided to visit Brass Balls again. After raining all night and some of the morning, we were ready to get going. We made the drive and reached the parking lot again. What a view. Seemed like we were on top of the world. I could see a lookout tower on top of the peek and thought we were in for another uphill hike. The hike was a 1/2 mile uphill. This was no sissy hike.

Top of the World

We finally reached the top and came upon the observatory. Brasstown Bald is the highest peek in Georgia at an elevation of 4983 feet. You can see Tennessee, North and South Carolina, and Georgia all in one turn of the head. There ware a lot of people up there and they were all suprised that Turkish made the hike with us. "He's the man," I replied. I could see my truck parked in the lot below. It looked like a little spec through my camera lens.

We walked around for a while then strated the hike back to the truck.
